World Music Day Celebrations

“If music be the food of love, play on”

On the beautiful, warm summer afternoon of 21st June, 2014 AAW brought together a handful of musicians and did what they are best at, creating magic. The quickly put together musical gig at The Living Room, Hauz Khas Village, New Delhi turned out to be a bigger hit than expected. In no time, the café was packed with enthusiastic people and the crowd only increased.

The air was already filled with anticipation when I entered the café. I had to crouch with a friend on the staircase, the only place i found, owing to the large audience present at the venue. I ran my eyes across the room and noticed strangers that were forced to sit together were now talking eagerly about the gig which was to start soon. I believe such is the beauty of music; it brings together perfect strangers in an air of mutual amiability.

The afternoon started with Jason Mraz’s ‘I’m Yours’ and was succeeded by Maroon 5’s ‘She Will Be Loved’. The event soon gathered pace and energy as the musicians started playing their own compositions. They surprised everyone with their sheer talent at such a young age by the pieces they had composed and played. The band ‘Raas’ set the mood right and was soon followed by a beautiful singer who performed a medley of songs and was followed by few more artists who sprung out delightful fusions of folk and classical music.

The thing I marvelled on, the most, was how at a young age these college going students took time out from their busy schedules to practise and enhance their art. However, like all good things it ended too soon or so it felt because when I checked my watch, a couple of hours had elapsed while I sat mesmerized by the beauty of music. The event ended with a delightful and energetic version of ‘dama dam mast kalandar’ as the crowd cheered and sang with the musicians.
